It has occurred to me that I reasonably often throw out brief philosophical musings and rants and so on over on my private media, where only my good friends and family can see it, and some of that should probably find its way over here during these times when I am too overwhelmed to do up a proper blog post and all that, so, well, I shall post it sometimes. To this end, here is one such musing:
I am also so utterly tired of all these people - ALL these people - who act like if something is going to kill you it just DOES, end of story, one second you're fine and the next you're keeled over dead. No scenario in their heads where that can take YEARS and YEARS of gradual change before your body just can't anymore, and the disability also doesn't work like that: there is generally no magically clear moment like in a motorcycle accident where one minute you're fine, and the next hey presto, disabled for life. You get worse and worse, usually, while they make you do more and more to PROVE you can do less and less, for YEARS, and then they screw you financially.
AND it's not "mutually exclusive". FUCK conversations that go, "Wait, you said your kid's in a wheelchair. Now you're saying she has severe chronic pain? Which IS it, then?" As though we're being greedy on the sympathy buffet line or some ableist bullcrap. "Just take one, asshole; you can't expect people to go to the effort of caring about more than that!" As if, by this point, we have it in us to expect ANYTHING from other people - except dismissal and skepticism and hostility.
This is not a video game wherein one has full capacity and all abilities right up until the second the health bar reaches zero and then poof. We can have more than one thing at once, even if they are both, or all, terrible. It can take ten years or even fifty to die of something. It can take ten years of increasing agony and incapacity to even be legally acknowledged as disabled. And then they take away 2/3 of your income. It's an "incentive". And other people say you're faking it for the gravy train, and your social world shrinks away. And then they yell at you for "not getting yourself out there".
YOLO?
